UC SAN DIEGO ATHLETIC UPDATE (April 3, 2006)

UCSD's Scott Clement playing in Exclusive Cape Cod Baseball League

LA JOLLA, Calif.  ? After earning All-CCAA and All-West Region honors in 2006, Scott Clement of the UC San Diego baseball team is building on his success by currently playing for the Yarmouth ? Dennis Red Sox (Y-V Sox) in the Cape Cod Baseball League.  Clement has earned the opportunity to play in the CCBL by replacing Rice University's catcher, while he plays in the College World Series.  A strong showing by Clement will earn him a permanent spot on the Yarmouth ? Dennis Red Sox, or another team in the CCBL.

Clement's first season at UCSD included the second highest homerun total in school history with 15.  He also led the team with 128 total bases and hit at a .349 clip.

The Encinitas native is the only player in school history to earn a roster spot in the premier summer baseball league.  The rosters of the 10 teams in the CCBL include the top collegiate players in the country, many of whom are competing in the College World Series.  In the recent 2006 Major League Baseball Draft, the CCBL boasted a record 175 total selections who performed in the league from 2003-05.

“Not only is this a great opportunity for Scott to face top talent in the top Summer League, it is unprecedented for UCSD baseball,” said UC San Diego head coach Dan O'Brien.

The talent alone in the Cape Cod Baseball League cannot be matched by any summer league.  In the 2006 MLB Draft, the top six picks played in the CCBL.  Luke Hochevar, the No. 1 overall pick from Tennessee played in the CCBL in 2003.  Other top picks included Greg Reynolds (Stanford), Evan Longoria (Long Beach State), Brad Lincoln (Houston), Brandon Morrow (California) and Andrew Miller (North Carolina).

Whether playing with or against the top players in the country, Clement continues to go about his business in the CCBL.  After an impressive tryout, Clement earned a roster spot as a catcher/first baseman for the Y-V Sox.  After the opener was rained out, Clement has taken part in three scrimmages, going a combined 2-for-6 with a double, walk and sac bunt.

“Sure some of the players are physically huge and either hit the ball a mile or have a strong pitching arsenal, but it does not make me nervous,” said Clement.  “We are all individuals here to play baseball which is something we all enjoy.”

It truly is baseball all-day, all week for Clement as he will instruct in several summer baseball camps for kids ages 4-12.  After a short afternoon break, he heads to the ballpark to play for the Y-V Sox, with games slated through the first few weeks of August.
