Dalquist Selected on Day Two of MLB Draft

Matthew Dalquist was selected in the 18th round by the Minnesota Twins

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball's Matthew Dalquist was selected on day two of the 2025 MLB Draft. Dalquist was selected in the 18th round (539 overall) by the Minnesota Twins.
 
Dalquist was an All-Big West Second Team selection in 2025 and was named Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete at the 2025 Triton Awards. Dalquist also excelled in the classroom as a two-time CSC Academic All-District honoree and Big West Spring All-Academic Team member. 
 
The righthander finished with a 4.26 ERA in three seasons in La Jolla, collecting 155 strikeouts compared to just 35 walks in 175.1 innings with a 13-8 record. Opponents hit .262 against him in 32 appearances with 31 starts.
 
Dalquist had a strong season as the Tritons' Friday starter in 2025, making 14 starts with a record of 6-5 and a 4.43 ERA. He collected 67 strikeouts compared to just 13 walks in 81.1 innings of work. The right-hander ranked first in the Big West and 16th nationally in walks allowed per nine innings (1.44), third in the conference (24th nationally) in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.15) and third in the Big West (11th nationally) in games started (14).
 
Dalquist finished fifth in the conference in innings pitched (81.1), seventh in WHIP (1.22), eighth in total wins (6), 11th in batters struck out looking (20), 14th in earned run average (4.43) and 15th in total strikeouts (67).
 
The Redondo Beach native earned the second Big West Pitcher of the Week award of his career on March 10, after pitching a career-long 7.2 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts against Cal State Bakersfield. He also pitched 7.0 innings with no walks and five strikeouts in a victory at No. 8 UC Irvine (May 2).
 
Dalquist becomes the fourth Triton to be selected in the MLB Draft in the program's Division I era, joining the trio of Ryan Forcucci, Matt Halbach and Izaak Martinez who were all selected in 2024. The UC San Diego baseball program has had 27 scholar-athletes selected in the MLB Draft since 1974, with Forcucci as the highest pick after being taken by the Houston Astros in the third round (101 overall).
