No. 21 Tritons Swept by Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. ? The 21st-ranked UC San Diego baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday at Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Tritons lost the first game 8-7, despite two homeruns by David Morehead and another by Scott Clement.  The winning run was scored on a hit-batsman in the bottom of the ninth.  UCSD struggled to get its offense rolling in game two, losing 7-2. UCSD is now 24-18 while the Otters improve to 13-29.

In the first game, UCSD led 4-0 through four innings.  David Morehead hit a two-run first-inning homerun.  Chris Hom had an RBI single in the second inning and Morehead homered in the third inning.

CSUMB tied it in the sixth at 5-5.

UCSD went ahead 7-5 in the eighth as Morehead was hit-by-pitch and Scott Clement homered.  The Tritons gave it right back in the bottom half as CSUMB scored twice to tie it at 7-7.

UCSD put a runner on second with one out in the ninth, but could not get the go-ahead run home.

CSUMB led off with a double in the ninth and the next Otter walked.  A fielders choice left runners on first and second with one out and then next Otter batter walked.  With the bases loaded and one out, the next Otter was hit, giving the Otters the walk-off on a hit bastman.

In game two, UCSD scored twice in the second inning, but CSUMB quickly went back in front with a run in the second and two in the third.  The Tritons could not generate much more offense as they ended up losing 7-2.  Tim Mort had two hits and an RBI to pace the Tritons.

UCSD is back in action on Tuesday for a non-conference game against Point Loma Nazarene.  First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
