LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's tennis team got to within one match of winning its third-straight CCAA Championship with a 5-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday afternoon at the Northview Tennis Courts.
With the victory the Tritons improved to 11-6 on the season and 8-0 in league play. UCSD has only two CCAA matches remaining on the year, both of which are against Cal Poly Pomona. If the Tritons can win one of those matches, they will clinch the outright league title.
Due to the rainy conditions, both teams agreed to play to the decision instead of playing out all nine matches. UCSD won all three doubles matches by scores of 8-1, 8-0 and 8-0 to take an early 3-0 lead.
The top four singles matches were started, but not completed. Tessa Tran held a 6-0, 5-0 lead over Leslie Begley at the No. 5 spot on the ladder while Christy Knudsen led Amanda Vanryn 6-1 and 4-0 at the No. 6 spot before the Roadrunners retired those matches as the rain returned.
UCSD returns to the court on Saturday with an afternoon match at Cal Poly Pomona.
