LA JOLLA, Calif -The UC San Diego baseball team fell behind Sonoma State 7-2, but rallied behind a five-run seventh inning to take the lead and win 11-7 over the Seawolves on Sunday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. The win gives UCSD a series split as the Tritons improve to 10-8, 4-4 CCAA while SSU drops to 11-9, 3-5 CCAA. Damian Fante went 5-for-5 with three RBI's, David Morehead went 4-for-4 and Garrett Imeson had a big RBI triple. Michael Kearney earned the win out of the pen with three shutout innings.
The Tritons got on the board in the first inning with two-outs. David Morehead, Scott Clement and John Roth hit consecutive singles for the 1-0 UCSD lead.
SSU took the lead on Trevor Howell's fielder's choice RBI and Dexter English reached on an error, scoring Howell for the 2-1 SSU lead in the second.
UCSD tied it in the second as Damian Fante led off with a single and advanced to second on Chris Hom's groundout to third. Fante then stole third base and would score on Garrett Imeson's sac fly to rightfield.
SSU scored four times in the third frame, two runs of which were unearned as the Seawolves took a 6-2 lead.
SSU's Carlos Pasillas homered in the fifth for the 7-2 lead.
David Gomez doubled with one out in the fifth and would come around to score on David Morehead's third hit of the game. UCSD trailed 7-3 through five.
In the UCSD sixth, Fante led off with a double to rightfield. Bryan Silverman followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Fante scored on Garrett Imeson's sac fly to bring UCSD within 7-4. After Silverman stole second, Tim Mort singled to shortstop to put runners back on the corners with one out and the potential tying run to the plate. Mort stole second to take the force out of play. The next Triton batter popped out for the second out of the frame. Morehead was then intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. The next Triton batter was retired without further damage at 7-4 SSU.
John Roth led off the UCSD seventh reaching on an error by the secondbase man. Jonathan Erickson then reached on an error by the centerfielder to put runners on second and third. Fante then tripled to rightcenter, for two RBI's and the score 7-6 SSU. Silverman then was hit-by-pitch, setting up runners on the corners with still no outs. Imeson tripled to rightcenter for two RBI, putting UCSD in the lead 8-7. Mort then singled with the infield drawn in to score Imeson for the 9-7 UCSD lead through seven innings.
In the UCSD eighth, Roth walked and moved to second on Erickson's sac bunt. Fante then followed with his fifth hit of the game, and RBI single to rightcenter, scoring Roth and UCSD led 10-7. With two outs and Fante on second, Imeson reached on an error on the SSU first baseman as Fante scored for the 11-7 advantage.
Michael Kearney allowed two hits in the final three innings to earn the win.
UCSD is back in action on Thursday, March 9 at Cal State L.A. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Los Angeles, Calif.
