Tritons Lose Twice to Seawolves

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego Baseball team suffered two tough losses on Saturday at Triton Baseball Field against Sonoma State.  UCSD lost game 1 13-10, despite being down 13-4 in the ninth inning.  In that final frame, UCSD batted around and scored six times on homeruns by Matt Cantele, David Gomez and Brian Trump.  UCSD had the potential tying run at the plate before the Seawolves retired the final Triton.  In game two, UCSD led 2-0 through four, but a SSU three-run fifth did in the Tritons.  UCSD stranded a man on secondbase in the final inning.  UCSD will try and earn a split against SSU on Sunday.  First pitch is set for 11:00 am on the La Jolla campus.

 

Game One

Sonoma State scored an unearned run in the second inning as Byron Grubman got out of a runners on second and third with no outs jam, trailing 1-0.

 

SSU scored two more times in the fourth on RBI's from Trevor Howell and Travis Babin to lead 3-0.

 

In the UCSD fourth, David Morehead led off with a walk and stole second.  Scott Clement doubled down the leftfield line for UCSD's first run.  With one out, John Roth doubled down the right field line, scoring Clement to bring UCSD within 3-2.  Tim Mort then doubled to left field with two outs, scoring Roth to tie the game at 3-3 at the end of four.

 

With one out in the fifth, David Gomez doubled to leftfield and came around to score on Morehead's single to right center for the go-ahead run.  UCSD led 4-3 after five.

 

In the sixth with one out, SSU's Carlos Padilla sinlged and Trevor Howell homered to put the Seawolves back ahead 5-4.

 

In the seventh, SSU opened up the game with a four-run inning to lead 9-4.  SSU tacked on three more runs in the eighth to lead 12-4.

 

Matt Cantele hit a two-run homerun to right center in the ninth and David Gomez also homered to bring UCSD with 13-7.  Brian Trump added a two-out three-run homerun to right to close the gap to 13-10.  Devin Incerti then reached on an error as the potential tying run reached the on-deck circle.  Tim Mort then singled on a bad hop over the shortstop to put the runners on the corners and the tying run to the plate in Cantele.  Cantele was finally retired to end the game 13-10, despite six runs and three homeruns by the Tritons in the ninth.

 

Game Two

SSU scored three times in the fifth to take the 3-2 lead.  UCSD had scored its runs on a Chris Hom double and a passes ball to take the 2-0 lead.  John Roth led off the ninth with a single and was sacrificed to second base by Bryan Silverman's sac bunt.  The next two Tritons could not get the run home as UCSD lost the game 3-2.
