FULLERTON, Calif. ? The 10th-ranked UC San Diego women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss on Wednesday to Division I member Cal State Fullerton on the Titan Tennis Courts. With the loss the Tritons fall to 5-3 on the season while CSUF improves to 3-9.
UCSD won only one doubles match as Katie McKee and Kristin Bronowicki posted a 9-8 victory at the No. 2 spot over Mai-Ly Tran and Shaghig-Shelly Injejikian. The Tritons lost at No. 1 by an 8-0 score and at No. 3 by an 8-1 margin to drop the doubles point under Division I scoring rule.
CSUF won five of the six singles matches, four of which came in straight sets. The lone victory for UCSD came at the No. 4 spot as Marissa Hilker notched a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Cheyenne Inglis.
Liz Brown took her match to a third set super tiebreaker against Ashley Dumbar at the No. 6 spot on the ladder. Brown lost the first set 6-3 before winning the second set by the same score. She battled hard in the third set but came up just short, losing 11-9 in the tiebreaker.
Head coach Liz LaPlante and her squad returns to action this weekend, traveling to Northern California for two matches. The Tritons will play at Sonoma State on Saturday before taking on Division I member, University of San Francisco, on Sunday.
