LONG BEACH, Calif.
- The UC San Diego swimming and diving teams completed another successful Pacific Coast Swimming Conference Championships on Saturday night. The UCSD women's team took home its third straight title by nearly 300 points and fifth in the past eight years, while the men's team finished in a strong second place behind Division II power Cal State Bakersfield, while the women bested the field that was comprised of several Division I teams. Individual awards were also handed out, with
Susan Bell named the PCSC Women's Swimmer of the Year and coach
Scott McGihon named PCSC Women's Coach of the Year, the sixth time he has been honored as coach of the year.
Nine men and 10 women will be making the trek to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis in three weeks. Susan Bell, Kendall Bohn, Emily Harlan, Jennie Margrave (diver), Sophie Levy, Andrea Lippin, Aubrey Panis, Louisa Salisbury, Shannon Simonds, Jennifer Sims and Danielle Warren make up the women's NCAA team, while Michael Baier, Tim Fuller, Daniel Gordh, Steven Hardy, Evan Hsiao, Lars Nordstrom, Barney Sclafani, Andrew Skewes and Joel Tourtellotte comprise the men's.
Day 4 (Saturday)
WOMEN'S Meet
In the opening event of the session, SR Sophie Levy led from start to finish, taking home the title in a nation-leading and school record 16:57.62, splitting 10:18.39 at the 1,000. JR Andrea Lippin placed 2nd in the event, finishing in the #3 time in the country (17:17.18/10:25.22split), while FR Jenn Navala was a surprise 5th in a ?B' standard 17:48.49.
In the next final of the evening, JR Susan Bell continued her winning ways, claiming her 3rd title of the meet in the 200 BK (2:05.39), ranking her 3rd nationally in the event. FR Aubrey Panis also placed 5th in the event (2:08.78), with JR Lauren Forbes finishing 10th in a ?B' cut (2:09.88).
JR Emily Harlan placed 2nd in the 100 Free (52.11), with FR Shannon Simonds placing 5th in the event (52.95), and FR Danielle Warren swimming to a 17th place finish (54.12).
In the 200 Breast, UCSD held fast to it's tradition in the event, with FR Kendall Bohn winning in a nation leading (2:18.57). UCSD has not lost the event in the past 6 years.
FR Jennifer Sims literally had the race of her life, taking home the gold in 2:05.19, with a time that ranks her 2nd nationally, and narrowly missed the UCSD school record (2:05.03) in the process.
In the penultimate event of the meet for the women, the Triton team of Warren (54.03), Bell (52.4), Levy (52.4) and Harlan (51.1) swam to a nation leading 3:29.93 in winning the event.
MEN'S Meet
In the last diving event of the meet, UCSD placed 3 divers into the top 8. JR Daniel Gordh led a 5-7-8 finish for UCSD, with JR Andrew Skewes and SO Jeff Bryant following.
SO Joel Tourtellotte placed 7th in the 1,650 (16:22.25/9:44.71split) to get things started at night for the Tritons. FR Steven Hardy (1:54.04) then led a UCSD 4-5-7 finish in the 200 BK, with fellow FR Scott McCoid (1:56.17) and FR Devin Ancona (1:57.70/1:54.92p) following.
JR Lars Nordstrom (46.57) placed 2nd in the 100 Free, with JR Tim Fuller (49.97/47.12p) still battling the stomach flu in his 8th place finish.
SO Derek Pettit then led a Triton 3-6-7-8-9-10 finish in the 200 Breast. He was followed by SO Ryan Kloos (2:11.15), SR Michael Baier (2:09.87p), JR Jacob Dong (2:10.18p) and FR Dan Gluvers (2:11.16).
JR Jesse Marin (1:53.22) then led a 3-10-11-12 finish in the 200 Fly for UCSD, with JR Paul Wikholm (1:55.07), SR Barney Sclafani (1:55.09) and SR Ben Falcioni (1:55.67) rounding out the scoring.
Hardy (48.99) led off the 5th place 400 Free Relay team, joined by SR Woody Hooten (47.3), McCoid (47.7) and Sclafani (48.0), with the team finishing in 3:12.08.
