WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ? In a vote of the conference's head coaches, Sonoma State sophomore Andew Bailey was chosen as the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Most Valuable Player of the Year.
The coaches also voted Tony Choi of UC San Diego as Freshman of the Year and Derrek Horn of Cal State L.A. as the Newcomer of the Year. Sonoma State head coach Marcus Ziemer was selected Coach of the Year. Additionally, 30 student-athletes were named to the All-CCAA First and Second Teams with 15 players receiving honorable mention.
Bailey, a forward from Davis, is second in the CCAA in scoring with 12 goals and four assists. Only Cal State Bakersfield's Lyle Martin has more goals than Bailey with 17. Bailey, who is also tied for fifth in game-winning goals scored, has led the Seawolves to the conference's best record of 13-2-1 (14-5-1 overall). He became the first Sonoma State player to win this award.
Choi, a midfielder from Folsom, was picked Freshman of the Year. He is second on the Tritons team with four goals and four assists while scoring two game-winning goals, which is tied for fifth among all players. He is the second UCSD student-athlete to receive this award (Brett Maurer, 2003).
Horn, a forward from Windsor, was selected as the top newcomer. Playing along side last year's Player of the Year in Morten Marthinsen, the transfer from Santa Rosa Junior College scored eight goals, which is fourth best in the CCAA, with two assists.
Ziemer was chosen by his colleagues as the 2006 Coach of the Year. Ziemer, who also won this award in 2002, has led the defending conference champions to a No. 2 ranking in the NCAA Far West Region and No. 16 in the NFCAA Top 25. The Seawolves will be the top seed in this week's CCAA Championships.
In addition to Choi's Freshman of the Year award, UCSD placed two student-athletes on the First Team All-CCAA squad and two more on the Second Team. Mark Moreira and Devon Cook earned First Team All-CCAA accolades while fellow senior Matt Horne and the freshman, Choi, earned Second Team distinction. Senior Dustin Tannenhaus earned Honorable Mention All-CCAA honors.
