LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team completed a good week of competition with its 2-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday evening on Triton Soccer Field. Earlier in the week the Tritons posted a 1-1 double overtime tie with No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. With the win UCSD improves to 5-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in CCAA play while the Broncos fall to 3-4-2 overall and 2-2-0 in league action.
The Tritons got on the board first as Matt Davey sent a rocket with his right foot into the back of the net from 12 yards out. His shot quickly beat CPP netminder Thomas Ryan after being set up on a pass from Dustin Tannenhaus that was flicked on by freshman Thomas Caplan. The goal was Davey's sixth of the season.
UCSD took the 1-0 lead into halftime and needed just under 40 minutes in the second half to get its insurance goal as Jon Krupansky started the play with a pass down the left side where Davey drew the keeper and fed Devon Cook for the empty net tally. The goal was the first of Cook's career.
Triton goalkeeper Edward Ruhland was very active between the pipes Saturday evening, facing 15 Bronco shots and being forced to make four saves. The shutout was his second of the year and the team's fourth as the Tritons have allowed only three goals all season long, two of which came on penalty kicks.
Ryan, Ruhland's counterpart, was equally busy as he faced 16 UCSD shots, making eight saves while allowing the two goals. Andrew Pierce took the most shots on the night for the Broncos, letting go on four shots, none of which, however, were on the mouth of the goal.
The Tritons return to CCAA play next week, traveling to Sonoma State on Friday night and San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon.
