LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior
Megan Dickey (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and sophomore Lauren Seagars (San Diego, Calif./University City HS) each had two goals apiece in UC San Diego's 7-0 victory over Western Oregon Thursday night at Triton Soccer Field. The Tritons improve to 2-0-0 on the year while the Wolves fall to 1-2-0.
Dickey's first goal was the only one of the first half, coming at the 14:45 mark as she took a centering pass from Kristina De La Rosa (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) and slid is past the WOU keeper for an early 1-0 lead.
UCSD, which out-shot WOU by a 27-3 margin on the evening, wasted little time in the second half putting the contest out of reach as Ali Lai (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) made it 2-0 at the 50:52 mark off assists from Dickey and Heather Szafraniec (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS). Kelly Cochran (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS) made it 3-0 just six minutes later on a penalty kick after being taken down inside the box.
After only four more minutes went by, Dickey added her second goal of the game at the 60:34 mark, curving her shot into the upper right corner from 18 yards out off a pass from Natasha Belak-Berger (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS).
Head coach Brian McManus, who subbed very liberally in the second half, watched his team add three more goals after the 72 minute mark, two of which came off the foot of Segars who was a second-half replacement. Caitlin Ryan (Chula Vista, Calif./University HS) was responsible for the sixth goal of the contest, slotting a penalty re-start kick into the upper right corner from 21 yards out.
Freshmen Mia Shirley (Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg HS) and Jessica McGovern (Reseda, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) combined for the shutout as both managed to make one save apiece in their time between the pipes.
UCSD continues its season-opening four-match homestand next Thursday night, September 8, hosting Central Washington at 7 p.m. The final match of the homestand will be against Seattle University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 10.
