Men's Golf Finishes 6th at SoCal Intercollegiate

Cal State Bakersfield fired a final round team score of 1-over par, 285, to pull away for a 16-stroke victory at the 55th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on Tuesday afternoon at The Santa Luz Club. The Roadrunners finished the three round tournament with a team total of 17-over par, 869, on the 7,112 yard, par-71 track in Del Mar, Calif.

Chico State and Hawaii-Hilo each finished in second place with a 33-over par total of 885, 13 shots ahead of fourth place finisher Sonoma State (46-over par, 898). Grand Canyon University finished in fifth place with a 49-over par team total of 901. Host UC San Diego finished sixth, one stroke behind GCU.

Hawaii-Hilo's Nick Mason captured Medalist honors after firing a final-round score of 4-under par, 67. His two day total of 2-under par, 211, was four shots better than second place finishers Brian Hostetler of Southwest Oklahoma State, Adam Lewis and Sonoma State and Greg Lopez of Cal State Bakersfield. D.J. Fernando of Cal State Bakersfield rounded out the top-five with his three round total of 3-over par, 216. Mason's 67 was the low round of the tournament and only two shots of the course record set by PGA Tour veteran Scott Simpson.

UCSD placed two teams in the tournament with its “A” team finishing sixth while the “B” team concluded play in 13th place. Justin Grant led the way for the Tritons' “A” squad, finishing in a tie for ninth place with his 7-over par total of 220. Joe Dolby ended in 32nd place at 15-over par while Brian Duckworth and Chris Hiahatake each finished in a tie for 38th at 17-over par. Luke Leveillee rounded out the UCSD “A” squad scores with his two day total of 21-over par, 234.

Ryo Yamada guided the “B” team for the Tritons, finishing in 24th place at 12-over par. Robbie Kramer ended in 50th place with his 22-over par score of 235. Jeff Kempler's 242 finished him in 60th place while Jan Godoski was only one shot back of Kempler and finished 63rd. Nick Jones fired his low round of the tournament on Tuesday, as his 78 gave him a two day total of 32-over par total of 245.

The Tritons return to action on March 28-29 at the Cal State San Bernardino Invitational. UCSD will then travel to the Sonoma State Invitational on April 4-5 and to the Buzzini Invitational hosted by Cal State Stanislaus on April 11-12.
