Women’s Basketball Earns First Ranking in Mid-Major Top 25®

The Tritons earned their first national ranking in the mid-major coaches' poll

BOSTON—After securing sole possession of first place in the Big West, UC San Diego women's basketball enters the Mid-Major Top 25® college basketball poll for the first time at No. 25. It is the first national ranking for the program since moving to Division I.

Last week, the Tritons earned a gritty 52-49 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, with Makayla Rose scoring the game-winner with 6.5 seconds on the clock. At the time, the Gauchos were No. 13 in the same Mid-Major poll.

The Tritons secured an 82-67 victory over CSUN on Saturday to move to 10-1 in conference play. UC San Diego set program records in steals (22) and turnovers forced (31), scoring 33 points off takeaways against the Matadors. Rose was pivotal once again, setting the Tritons' single game record with eight steals and leading the team with 18 points.

UC San Diego currently ranks 20th in Division I in turnover margin (6.57) and 34th nationally in turnovers forced per game (20.76).

Now in its 16th season, the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25® is voted on by 31 Division I coaches. The poll is announced every Tuesday. The Tritons are one of two Big West teams in this week's survey, with second-place UC Irvine ranked 20th.
