Tritons 5th, Hanjie Yu 9th at Lake Las Vegas Invitational

HENDERSON, Nev. - The UC San Diego golf team shot 11 under par Wednesday, its best round of the tournament, to place in a tie for fifth at the Lake Las Vegas Invitational. 

The University of Louisiana hosted the 11-team tournament at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson.

The Tritons shot 16 under par over 54 holes of play. They were in fourth place after going 10 under par in Tuesday's second round and in seventh following a five over total in Monday's opening round.

Texas State finished in a tie for fifth with UC San Diego. 

Boise State won the tournament at 23 under par, four strokes better than second place Louisiana. Coastal Carolina and Northern Illinois tied for third at 17 under.

Freshman Hanjie Yu was UC San Diego's top individual, placing in a tie for ninth at six under. His play was elevated each day. In round one he posted a four over 76, followed by a four under 68 in round two. Wednesday, he finished his outing with a six under par 66, rocketing up 16 spots on the leader board.

Three other Tritons placed in the top 20, including Justin Gill (-4) in 13th, Leo Cheng (-3) in 18th, and Nathan Tseng (-3) in 18th. Francis Catalano shot a three under 69 to move up 10 spots in the standings to 42nd.

UC San Diego had eight players on course - five that counted in the team scoring and three that were playing as individuals.

Boise State's Cole Rueck was the individual winner, finishing 16 under par. Austin Peay's Patton Samuels was four strokes back in second. Malan Potgieter from Louisiana and Mason Haley from Kansas City were six strokes behind Rueck in third.

In total, there were 69 players in the field.

UP NEXT
The Tritons play in the Nick Watney Invitational March 2-3 at San Joaquin Country Club. Fresno State serves as the host school. In February of 2025 UC San Diego placed fifth of 13 teams at the tournament.
