Season's First Road Matches on Tap for Tritons

UC San Diego to face SDSU Saturday Night at Snapdragon Stadium

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Fresh off its first victory of the young season, UC San Diego women's soccer (1-1-1) heads out on the road for the first time this season to begin a four-game road trip – its longest stretch of the season away from La Jolla. The Tritons won't travel far for the first one; they'll take on San Diego State (1-2) at Snapdragon Stadium Saturday night. On Monday, the trip continues with a Labor Day morning tilt at Pacific (1-2-1).

UC San Diego squared off with both teams last season, earning a 1-0 victory at San Diego State and falling to UOP by that same score in La Jolla.

LAST TIME OUT: UC SAN DIEGO 3, UNLV 2 | Stats
Redshirt freshman Ava Tibor scored a pair of goals and freshman Molly Blom added the game-winner as UC San Diego downed visiting UNLV, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Stadium. Tibor's brace was her second of the young season, and the reigning Big West Freshman of the Week has already notched four goals – more than twice as many as any other Big West player through the season's first two weeks. UC San Diego improved to 1-1-1 with the victory while UNLV is now 0-2-1.

TIBOR TAKES BIG WEST HONORS…AGAIN
For the second time in as many weeks, UC San Diego forward Ava Tibor has been named The Big West Freshman of the Week. She scored two more goals – one coming on a penalty kick – as the Tritons downed UNLV, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. Tibor's brace is already her second of the young season in just three matches played. Her four goals scored are twice as many as anyone else in The Big West, and she is also tops in the conference with eight points through the season's first two weeks.

Of seven braces by a Triton in UC San Diego's Division I era (2021-present), Tibor now boasts two of those seven.

Tibor is the third Triton to earn Big West Freshman of the Week accolades since UC San Diego joined the conference in 2021. Teammates Alexis Nguyen (2023, twice) and Allie Luo (2022) have also captured the weekly freshman honor.

LAST TIME VS. THE AZTECS (9/12/24) | Stats
For the second match in a row, UC San Diego senior Raquel Kalpakoff scored a first half goal. This time, the Tritons were able to make that tally hold up as UC San Diego earned a 1-0 win over San Diego State atop the SDSU Sports Deck. Sophomore goalkeeper Bella Barretto made a career-high six saves in posting her first clean sheet. The win was the Tritons' first-ever over the Aztecs.

LAST TIME VS. THE TIGERS (9/22/24) | Stats
UC San Diego concluded its non-conference schedule with a 1-0 setback to Pacific on Youth Day at Triton Soccer Stadium. The Tritons dominated in time of possession and out-shot the Tigers, 14-3, but UOP's Sierah McCallum came off the bench and netted the game's lone goal in the 81st minute to put the visitors on top.

WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.
