IRVINE, Calif. — Two UC San Diego scholar-athletes were honored by The Big West's coaches today as Athletes of the Week for March 3-9.
Anthony Flowers is the Men's Track Athlete of the Week and
Sylvana Northrop is the Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Flowers participated in three events at last weekend's Ben Brown Invite, winning one while setting two school records. He finished fourth in both the 100m and 200m, with his 20.99 mark in the 200m good for his first record. Flowers also ran the 4x100m relay with
Brycen Tablit,
Kian Maher and
Brandon Orlow. The team finished in 40:57 to win the event and break another school record. That time is also the second-best mark in The Big West this season.
Northrop ran the 5000m and set her second school record in as many weeks. She ran 16:34.78, besting the previous mark by over 20 seconds. That time saw Northrop finish third at the meet, which was hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Her mark is also the best in The Big West so far this season.
A sophomore from Torrance, California, Flowers is a psychology major in Warren College. Northrop is a senior from Cupertino, California, majoring in cognitive science in Muir College.
The Big West is in its second week of honors this season. The Tritons were also recognized in week one when
Jaden Rucker was selected as the Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Flowers, Northrop and the rest of the Tritons will be back in action March 21-22 when they visit San Diego State.
