LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego is represented at the Paris Olympics by a pair of Tritons -
Matt Ustaszewski and Dan Golubovic.
Ustaszewski ('04) is the current head coach and former co-captain of UC San Diego's men's water polo team. He is in Paris serving as an assistant coach with Team USA. It is the second Olympics for Ustaszewski as he was also a coach with the U.S. men's water polo team in 2020 in Tokyo.
In 2024, there are 12 teams divided into two groups of six. Both groups play a round-robin style preliminary stage so that each team plays all five other teams in its group. Every win is worth two points, and every tie is worth one point for the overall group standing. Once all match-ups have taken place, the top-four teams in each group's standings advance to the knockout round, while the bottom two teams per group are eliminated.
The first game for the United States was on July 28, a 12-8 loss against Italy.
Golubovic ('16) competed with UC San Diego's track and field team from 2012-2016. He will be representing Australia in Paris as he competes in the Decathlon, which starts on August 2.

About UC San Diego Athletics
After two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program began a new era in 2020 as a member of The Big West in NCAA Division I. The 23-sport Tritons earned 30 team and nearly 150 individual national championships during its time in Divisions II and III and helped guide 1,400 scholar-athletes to All-America honors.
