SAN DIEGO – Playing in her second tournament as a Triton, UC San Diego newcomer
Julia Haynes paced UC San Diego in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, held on the campuses of San Diego State and USD. One of six Tritons to compete at the event, Haynes advanced to the third round – further than any Triton in the program's Division I era.
Haynes won two of three matches and advanced to the round of 16 in singles play. Haynes topped Arizona State's Karsyn Evans, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. Later that day, she bested Grand Canyon's Gala Arangio, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5). The appearance in the ITA round of 16 marked the Tritons' best Division I performance in the fall's most prestigious event.
Haynes was one of six Tritons competing at the ITAs. She was joined by seniors
Kelly Leung,
Naomi Nguyen, and
Katelyn Vu. Sophomore
Polina Jorniak and freshman
Allison Lian also participated.
UC San Diego continues fall play on Nov. 2 at the two-day Pomona-Pitzer Tournament in Claremont, Calif.
