Aguirre Nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Joining the historic number of 619 NCAA Woman of the Year nominees, senior Bobbi Aguirre from softball was chosen to represent UC San Diego in the 2023 nominations.

Since 1991, The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service, and leadership throughout their college careers.

Bobbi Aguirre represented the softball team on the Triton Athletics' Council (UC San Diego's SAAC) from 2019-20. She then became the TAC vice president the following year as a junior. With an extra year of eligibility due to COVID, Aguirre was a two-time TAC president for the Tritons. She coordinated several community service projects including beach clean-ups, fundraising for lower income households, and general community support.

Along with her community presence, Aguirre has earned academic recognition each season of play. She was a CCAA All-Academic, CCAA Spring All-Academic, and a three-time Big West All-Academic. In her final season, the Chino Hills product was recognized by UC San Diego as she won the Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete award. The award recognizes seniors who not only make an impact on the field but in the classroom and their community.

In her tenure as a softball Triton, she played 226 games and started 224 over five years to become a three-time All-Conference player, a three-time All-Academic, a three-time conference player of the week, a CCAA All-Tournament Team selection, and a NFCA All-West Region Team selection. Navigating injury, a division change, a pandemic, playing multiple positions, and the loss of her father, Bobbi still resides in the UC San Diego record books in 11 different categories with six spots on the career all-time list and five on the single season all-time list.

The Big West will select two official conference nominees from 10 nominated across the conference, from there, the WOTY committee will choose the Top 30 honorees – 10 from each division. Out of the 30 honorees the committee will select three finalists from each division which will be announced in November.

From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will choose the 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year. The honorees will be celebrated at the Woman of the Year Award Ceremony at the NCAA Convention in Phoenix in January.
