15th-Ranked Tritons Host No. 6 UC Irvine Friday in Big West Showdown

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 15th-ranked UC San Diego Women's Water Polo team has a busy weekend coming up. Friday, the Tritons play their first home Big West game of the season by hosting sixth-ranked UC Irvine at Canyonview Aquatic Center (6 p.m). Saturday, the team makes its way across town to compete in San Diego State's Aztec Invitational.

The Tritons come into Friday with an overall record of 5-12 and a Big West mark of 0-1 as they fell against No. 7 Long Beach State in their conference opener last week. All of UC San Diego's games prior to that took place over four different tournaments. Most recently, the Tritons participated in UC Irvine's Barbara Kalbus Invitational, where they came away with a victory against Pomona-Pitzer but fell to No. 5 Hawai'i, No. 11 Indiana, and No. 17 UC Davis.

UC Irvine enters Friday's game with a 9-6 overall record and a 1-0 mark in conference action. The Anteaters defeated No. 10 UC Santa Barbara last week in their Big West opener.

The first 250 students at Friday's game will get free thundersticks.

At the Aztec Invite, UC San Diego will play four matches, two on Saturday and two on Sunday. Saturday the Tritons take on Siena (11 a.m.) and Villanova (3:30 p.m.). Sunday it will be St. Francis (10:30 a.m.) and No. 13 Princeton (12:30 p.m.).

WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.

 About UC San Diego Athletics
After two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program began a new era in 2020 as a member of The Big West in NCAA Division I. The 23-sport Tritons earned 30 team and nearly 150 individual national championships during its time in Divisions III and II and helped guide 1,400 scholar-athletes to All-America honors. A total of 83 Tritons have earned Academic All-America accolades, while 38 have received prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships. UC San Diego scholar-athletes exemplify the academic ideals of one of the world's preeminent institutions, graduating at an average rate of 90 percent, the highest rate among NCAA Division I and II institutions.
