BIG NEWS FROM THE BIG WEST
This season, the Big West will field men's water polo again following a 32-year hiatus. The conference previously sponsored the sport from 1984-91. Joining the Tritons are Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara. With six teams, the conference qualifies for an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship (the 2023 tournament will consist of seven conference champions plus two at-large selections). Original members of the Big West included Fresno State, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara. Two Big West programs boast national championships while competing in the conference, with UC Santa Barbara claiming the Division I men's water polo championship in 1979 while UC Irvine took home national titles in 1982 and 1989.
FIRST AND GOALS
On Sept. 14 in La Jolla, UC San Diego defeated Long Beach State 11-10 in overtime in the first Big West game in 32 years. Rhys Bugelli scored the game-winner at 2:39 of the first overtime period to ice the inaugural victory. Ante Buzov made his Triton debut a good one, recording a hat trick and adding three steals, three drawn exclusions, and two field blocks.
FIRST AND GOAL
Sophomore Collin Tournat scored his first career goal for the Tritons on Nov. 9 against Biola in La Jolla.
USTASZEWSKI HELPS TEAM USA EARN OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION
UC San Diego head coach Matt Ustaszewski was recently with the U.S. Men's Senior National Team at the Pan-Am Games in Santiago, Chile. As an assistant coach, he helped the squad win a gold medal and earn a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Team USA picked up victories against Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina en route to the gold medal game, in which the U.S. defeated Brazil for a second time. Read more here.
DENNY HARPER INDUCTED INTO UC SAN DIEGO ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Long-time former head coach Denny Harper was inducted into the UC San Diego Athletics Hall of Fame on Nov. 11. Harper led the Triton men from 1980-2021 and was also the head coach of the UC San Diego women's program from 1985-1999. The Triton women won five national titles under Harper. Overall, he won 697 games as men's head coach and 245 as women's head coach. Harper is a 17-time ACWPC National Coach of the Year and a 19-time Western Water Polo Association Coach of the Year.
FEZZEY NAMED BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
On November 8, UC San Diego's Brendon Fezzey was named the Big West Men's Water Polo Player of the Week, the first from UC San Diego. Fezzey scored four goals, including the game-winner with 28 seconds left on the clock, to lift UC San Diego to a huge, 11-10 Big West victory over UC Davis in La Jolla. The four goals marked a new single game high for the sophomore. Fezzey also found the net once in the first quarter before erupting for three in the final period, the first of which tied the score at 8-8 and the second that evened it at 10-10. His four goals came off five shots, an .800 shooting percentage. The win helped the Tritons secure the third seed for the Big West Men's Water Polo Championship, which UC San Diego will host at Canyonview Aquatic Center Nov. 17-19.

THEY CALL HIM USHA
UC San Diego is led by second-year head coach Matt "Usha" Ustaszewski, who took over in 2022 for Denny Harper, who announced his retirement in July after 42 years at the helm. Ustaszewski earned his first victory as UC San Diego's head coach on Sept. 3, 2022, as the Tritons defeated La Verne, 22-8, in the team's season opener during the Triton Invitational. In 2021, Ustaszewski completed his ninth season as associate head coach and 12th season overall on the UC San Diego men's water polo staff. Usha is no stranger to the La Jolla campus. He was a co-captain of the fifth-ranked Triton water polo team as a senior in 2003 for under the tutelage of Harper. He graduated in 2004, completing his bachelor's degree in history (Europe emphasis) with a 3.5 grade-point average. For Usha's complete bio, click here.

ON THE MOVE
After 20 seasons playing as an NCAA Division II team, the entire UC San Diego athletics program is currently in the final year of a four-year transition to NCAA Division I, culminating in full DI status as a member of the Big West Conference for the 2024-25 academic year. At that time, all sports will be eligible for conference and NCAA postseason play.
GAME DAY HAS GONE DIGITAL
Triton fans can find game day information online as game programs have gone digital! WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became UC San Diego's mascot in 1964.
