Women’s Basketball Announces Non-Conference Slate

UC San Diego will begin the 2022-23 season on Nov. 7 at California Baptist

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego women's basketball has released its full 2022-23 schedule with the addition of 10 non-conference contests, as announced Tuesday by head coach Heidi VanDerveer

The Tritons will host three home contests in LionTree Arena and travel for seven matchups on the road—including participating in the UNLV Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend.

"I'm very excited about the challenges of our schedule this season," said VanDerveer. "Especially at the UNLV Tournament where three of the eight teams participating went to the NCAA Tournament or WNIT last year. It's a very challenging schedule, with a great variety of teams to prepare us for what will be arguably one of the most competitive Big West groups in the three years that we've been in the conference."

UC San Diego will open its 22-23 slate on Nov. 7, when the Tritons travel to face California Baptist in Riverside, Calif. UC San Diego will begin with back-to-back road trips, traveling to Flagstaff, Ariz. to take on Northern Arizona on Nov. 13.

The home schedule kicks off Nov. 20 when the Tritons play host to Portland in LionTree Arena.

The Thanksgiving holiday will see UC San Diego travel to Las Vegas for the UNLV Tournament. Participating teams include host UNLV, East Tennessee State, George Washington, Illinois State, Louisiana Tech, Stetson and UC San Diego. Competition will begin Nov. 25, with the Tritons facing off with Illinois State in a true double-elimination bracket tournament.

On Dec. 1, the Tritons will welcome San Diego State to LionTree Arena for the first time since joining the Aztecs' Division I ranks.

In its final road trip of the non-conference slate, UC San Diego will travel to the Bay Area to take on Pac-12 foe, Cal, on Dec. 16 and wrap up the trip at San Jose State on Dec. 18.

The Tritons will close out the schedule on Dec. 21, playing host to Seattle before the holiday break.

"Our hope is that our nonconference schedule will prepare us to face all the challenges that we will come up against in the Big West, we're very excited for the 2022-23 season."

UC San Diego finished its 2021-22 season with a 13-14 overall record and went 10-8 in Big West play—tallying its first winning conference record in year two of Division I competition and finishing fifth. The Tritons swept eventual Big West champion Hawai'i in the season series and were responsible for two of the 'Bows three conference losses.

The returning squad features four of the five starters from the 2021-22 season, including All-Big West second team selection Sydney Brown and All-Big West honorable mention Julia Macabuhay. The Tritons also added four talented true freshman and a grad transfer to their experienced roster.
