EL MACERO, Calif. – The UC San Diego men's golf team began the three-day El Macero Classic with an 11 over par 299 to sit in 14th place through the first round of play. UC San Diego freshman
Francis Catalano shot a one-under 71 and sits in a tie for 18th entering Thursday's action.
With 36 holes to play, the Tritons will enter day two 19 strokes behind tournament leader LMU and one stroke behind Idaho for 13th place.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The morning got off to a strong start for UC San Diego. Playing the back nine at the outset, redshirt freshman
Davis McDowell birdied the par four 10th hole. On the 191-yard par three 12th, both Catalano and junior
Elliot Bunyaviroch shot a birdie to keep the momentum going. As a team, the Tritons shot eight birdies over the first nine holes. At the midway point, UC San Diego was even as a team, trailing leader LMU by just three strokes.
However, once UC San Diego made the turn, the team's fortunes shifted as well. The Tritons shot 11-over on their final nine holes to conclude the first round.
