Two Players in Top-30 as Tritons Finish 16th at Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team posted its best round of the tournament and two Tritons finished in the top-30 Tuesday as the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic concluded.

San Diego State and the University of San Diego co-hosted the prestigious tournament at San Diego Country Club.

The stacked, 16-team field included two teams ranked in the national top-20, seven in the top-60, and 13 in the top-100.

All three NCAA Division I teams from San Diego competed - San Diego State, UC San Diego, and the University of San Diego. 

UC San Diego and UC Davis were the only Big West Conference teams in the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego finished in 16th place with a three-round total of 881, 17-over par on the par-72, 7,033-yard course. The Tritons finished strong, carding a 287 in Tuesday's third and final round after turning in a 294 and a 300 in Monday's first two rounds. Their 1-under par 287 was the seventh-best round of the day.

Junior Elliot Bunyaviroch placed in a tie for 25th, while freshman Francis Catalano finished in a tie for 28th in the 95-player field. 

Bunyaviroch finished 2-under par with a 214, firing rounds of 73, 72, and 69. He was tied for 43rd going into the third round and his 69 propelled him up 18 spots on the leader board.

Catalano also made a big advancement today. He finished with a 1-under 215 with rounds of 69, 76, and 70. He entered the day in 43rd position, the same as Bunyaviroch, and bettered his final placement by 15 positions. Catalano holed two eagles, one on the par-5 14th hole in the opening round and the other on the par-4 first hole in round three.

The rounds of 69 by Bunyaviroch and Catalano were the best of the tournament for UC San Diego. They each totaled 37 pars over 54 holes, tied for the third-most in the field.

Also of note, redshirt freshman Davis McDowell averaged a 3.83 on par-4 holes, the third-best of the tournament.

LSU won the team title with a 37-under 827. The Tigers shot rounds of 267, 273, and 287. Washington, ranked eighth nationally, finished eight strokes behind in second and 15th-ranked Notre Dame was third, 10 strokes back of LSU.

Nick Arcement totaled a 203, 13-under par, as the individual medalist. He carded rounds of 65, 68, and 70. RJ Manke and Noah Woolsey from the University of Washington tied for second place, both coming in two strokes back of Arcement. 

The San Diego Country Club course played to a 72.77 scoring average from the championship tees. The third round turned out a tournament-high 73.19 scoring average. There were 31 eagles over the two days.

Following a week off, the Tritons host their own UC San Diego Invitational at La Costa in Carlsbad, Calif., March 21-22.
