COTO de CAZA, Calif. - Playing in its first tournament of 2022 Monday, the UC San Diego men's golf team sits in fifth place after two rounds of action at the Orange County Collegiate Classic.
The two-day, 54-hole, 10-team event is happening at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club with UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton serving as co-hosts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego is 35-over par with a 611. The Tritons shot a 307 in the opening round and improved by three strokes with a 304 in the second round.
Redshirt freshman
Davis McDowell is the top Triton thus far, tied for seventh place in the 63-player field. He is 3-over par with a 147 after firing a 70 (-2) in round one and a 77 (+5) in round two.
Also playing for the Tritons are freshman
Francis Catalano (tied for 26th, 75-78--153, +9), junior
Elliot Bunyaviroch (tied for 32nd, 80-74--154, +10), senior
Ryan Vaughan (tied for 52nd, 86-75--161, +17), and senior
Sergi Mata (tied for 54th, 82-81--163, +19). In addition, senior
Ethan Chen (tied for 35th, 81-74-155, +11) is playing as an individual and his scores do not count towards the team's totals.
Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine are tied for first place, each 12-over par with a 588. The Anteaters posted rounds of 304 (+16) and 284 (-4), while the Titans went 298 (+10) and 290 (+2). Seattle is six strokes back in third place.
UC Irvine's Kolbe Irei leads the field as the only player under par with a 143 (-1). He shot rounds of 75 (+3) and 68 (-4).
Seven teams out of the Big West Conference are playing including Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara. California Baptist, Central Arkansas, and Seattle round out the field.
