Tritons Back in the Pool This Week vs. Bruins, Gophers

UC San Diego women visit UCLA Saturday, Tritons host Minnesota Sunday

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego returns to the pool this week as the women visit UCLA on Saturday. The following morning, the Triton men and women will host Minnesota at Canyonview Aquatic Center. Sunday's meet will feature a live video feed on UCSDTritons.com.

The last time UC San Diego's full squad competed was in November at the Trailblazer Invitational in Utah.

LAST TIME OUT
The UC San Diego women's swim team traveled to Berkley to conclude 2021 against No. 5 Cal. This un-scored meet consisted of a total of 13 events that included the 300 back relay, 300 breast relay, 300 butterfly relay, 600 yard free, among others. A group consisting of Lexi DePaco, Gabi Icheva, and Juli Arzave beat the Bears to the wall with a final time of 2:50.47 leading the 300-yard breast relay.

WOMEN WIN TRAILBLAZER INVITATIONAL
The Tritons  women's team took first place in the 10-team Dixie State Trailblazer Invitational with two new additional team records on day three of the event, held Nov. 18-20.
 
During finals, Spencer Daily landed the Tritons first place in the 100 Free while Aidan Simpson lead the 200 Breast. For the women, Katja Pavicevic set a new team record in the 200 Breast and UC San Diego's 400 Free Relay group put up impressive times leading their races.

KATJA PAVICEVIC CAPTURES ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONOR
Junior Katja Pavicevic was named UCSDTritons.com Athlete of the Week on Nov. 21. She set a school record in the 200 breast on day three of the Trailblazer Invitational, hosted by Dixie State. Pavicevic's time of 2:13.16 was good for first place overall. The Ontario native was also part of UC San Diego's victorious 200 medley relay team on day two of the event, helping the UC San Diego women take first place in the 10-team meet.

DAILY EARNS MPSF ACCOLADES
UC San Diego senior Spencer Daily won two individual events and was a part of two winning relays in the Tritons' first-ever win over UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 6). Daily won the 50 free with an MPSF season-best and 'B' cut (20.04), as well as another first-place 'B' cut in the 100 fly (48.19). Daily also split a 20.64 on the winning 200 medley relay and then anchored the first-place 400 free relay (44.43 split). This is Daily's third career MPSF weekly award.…

TYLER JAMES RECOGNIZED AS UCSDTRITONS.COM ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Tyler James was named UCSDTritons.com Athlete of the Week on Nov. 8. He recorded a new National Invitational Championship qualifying time of 49.08 (B-cut) to win the 100-yard backstroke against the Gauchos at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The graduate student placed first in the event, as well as helping the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams finish on top of the podium and earn UC San Diego swimming and diving the program's first victory over UC Santa Barbara.

ARZAVE NAMED UCSDTRITONS.COM ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Juli Arzave captured UCSDTritons.com Athlete of the Week honors on Nov. 1. She swept the distance events to help UC San Diego women's swimming and diving earn the victory over UC Davis on Oct. 30. The junior placed first in the 1650-yard freestyle with a B-cut time of 17:06.52 and also took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.41.
 
FRANKE FINDS CALM IN THE KITCHEN
Two-sport All-American Ciara Franke was recently profiled on UCSDTritons.com about the peace she finds in baking. Franke is an All-American swimmer and was the Big West women's water polo Player of the Year in 2021.
 
UP NEXT
The UC San Diego divers will compete at the UCLA Invite Jan. 14-16. Meantime, the rest of the Tritons will visit USC for a dual meet at Noon on Saturday, Jan. 15 in Los Angeles.
 
FRESH FACES
UC San Diego welcomed 14 newcomers to its roster for the 2021-22 season, including five women and nine men. Eight scholar-athletes join the Tritons from California, while Arizona, Hawai'i and Washington are also represented. The roster also boasts two international additions, traveling from Germany and Serbia. 
 
RETURNING TALENT
UC San Diego returns 31 letterwinners for the 2021-22 season and 10 sophomores who have yet to compete for the Tritons. Among the top returners, Juli Arzave, Spencer Daily and Ivan Kurakin all competed in the recent Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. in June of 2021. 
 
CAPTAINS
Captains for the 2021-22 season are Jordan Phillips & Tyler James.
 
MPSF CONFERENCE
The Tritons enter year three of competing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) conference and their first as a Division I program. The conference features all Division I schools including BYU, Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, Hawai'i, Pacific, San Diego (women), UC Davis (women), UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara.
 
Competing as the only Division II school in the conference in 2019-20, the men finished fourth and the women finished fifth.

ALUM TRAVIS MILLER RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE ALL-TIME BEST
UC San Diego alumnus Travis Miller '94 was recognized in the College of Swimming and Diving Coaches Association's list of the 100 Greatest Men's Swimmers and Divers. 
 
To celebrate CSCAA's 100th year as the nation's first college coaches' organization, they constructed a list of the top 100 greatest college swimmers and divers. Out of 973 finalists drawn from nearly three thousand nominations, Miller secured one of the 100 selections.
