Return To Sport… Safely
In order for UC San Diego scholar-athletes to be permitted to return to training and competition safely and within federal, state, local and university guidelines, the athletic department implemented a number of measures designed to complement and enhance the university's highly-successful
Return To Learn program. Notable actions include being physically distanced, including during out-of-season training sessions; wearing masks, except when undergoing physically strenuous exercise; and maintaining proper hygiene.
- All scholar-athletes, coaches, athletics staff and gameday personnel are required to conduct COVID-19 PCR testing at a higher frequency than the general university population. Most scholar-athletes are testing at a rate of three times per week.
- Adhere to all CDC and NCAA standards required to return to training and competition.
- Department officials participate in regular meetings with conference and university-affiliated physicians and the UC San Diego emergency operations staff to ensure compliance and receive advice and consultation on policy and operations.
- Travel is restricted to reduce time away from campus, limit air travel and decrease the need for overnight hotel lodging.
- Facilities and equipment undergo frequent sanitization and only a limited number of essential individuals who are screened and tested are allowed within close proximity of the competition and training areas.
