LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 25 University of California San Diego women's basketball team earned five 2019-20 All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) nods, as well as the Most Valuable Player award. The conference announced the selections this morning.
Julia Macabuhay was named Most Valuable Player and was selected to the first team with
Tyla Turner, while
Sydney Sharp was picked to the second team.
Brianna Claros and
Sydney Brown were recognized with honorable mentions.
Most Valuable Player
Macabuhay led the way with the title of Most Valuable Player, marking the third-straight year that a Triton has received the honor. Macabuhay has dominated throughout the season, averaging 17.6 points in 28 games. Her scoring average currently ranks second in the conference. The sophomore has scored 20 or more points in 11 contests this season, including a career-high of 30 in UC San Diego's win over Cal State LA on Feb. 15.
Across the board, Macabuhay has displayed tremendous accuracy. In addition to shooting 49% (176-363) overall, she has shot 40% (53-132) from behind the three-point arc and 80% (87-109) at the charity stripe. The Los Angeles native is the only player in the CCAA to rank in the top-5 in both field goal percentage and free throw percentage, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Assists have been another strength for Macabuhay this season, as she holds the second-place slot in the CCAA and ranks 18
th in the nation with a 2.3 assist/turnover ratio. With 111 assists so far this season, Macabuhay stands at ninth in program history for most assists in a single season.
First Team
Joining Macabuhay on the first team is Triton newcomer Turner. This is Turner's second time on the All-CCAA First Team, as she previously was tabbed to the team when she earned the Newcomer of Year distinction in 2017-18. Turner is also joined on the first team by twin sister Tyra of Humboldt State.
The San Bernardino native's 12.0 points per game are good for 14
th in the conference and second on the team, while her 5.6 rebounds per game earn her the 21
st slot in the CCAA and second among the Tritons. On Feb. 1, Turner recorded 13 rebounds, 10 points, and 10 assists, becoming one of only 14 players from across the nation to record a triple-double this season.
Turner is coming off one of her best games of the season, as she put up a season-high 26 points on Tuesday evening to lead UC San Diego to the semifinals of the CCAA Tournament.
Second Team
In her final season with the Tritons, Sharp garners her second All-CCAA Second Team nod. Sharp was also named to the second team in 2018-19.
Appearing in all 28 games for the Tritons and starting all but one, the North Tustin product is averaging 10.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Sharp's rebounding average is good for first on the team, as well as 14
th in the conference. The Triton guard also holds a spot on the conference three-point field goal percentage leaderboard, ranking seventh with 30% (62-207).
Sharp has recorded five double-doubles across the season. Most recently, Sharp put up 12 points and 12 rebounds in UC San Diego's CCAA Tournament quarterfinal victory over Humboldt State.
Honorable Mentions
A pair of Triton sophomores, Claros and Brown, earn All-CCAA honorable mentions for their efforts.
Claros, last year's CCAA Freshman of the Year, has followed up with another impressive season. Averaging 2.5 assists per game, Claros ranks 15
th in the conference and second on the Triton squad. The San Francisco native is also averaging 8.1 points per game in her sophomore year, good for fifth on the team. She recorded a new career high with 20 points in UC San Diego's victory at Cal State East Bay on Feb. 20.
Claros is one of five Tritons to appear in every game this season and has started all but two. She has been a constant for the Tritons, playing an average of 33.8 minutes per game, which is the sixth-most in the CCAA.
Like Claros, Brown made an immediate impact in her first season with the Tritons, having transferred to UC San Diego from Columbia. Playing in 27 games, Brown has averaged 5.3 rebounds per game, which ranks 24
th in the conference, along with 9.4 points per game. The Rexford, N.Y. product recorded her first collegiate double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in UC San Diego's win over San Francisco State on Jan. 23.
Brown has been accurate throughout the season, shooting 46% (90-195) overall for second place among the team. Additionally, Brown is shooting 42% (35-84) from behind the three-point arc and 86% (38-44) at the free throw line.
