Tritons Suffer First Loss of the Season in Double Overtime Against Point Loma

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men's soccer team fell to Point Loma, 2-1, in double overtime on Thursday night. With the result, UC San Diego moves to 4-1 on the season, while Point Loma improves to 3-1.

After an own goal in the first half led to a 1-0 deficit, the Tritons were relentless in the second half. Despite many close chances, including a shot by Jón Veigar Kristjánsson that hit the left post, it was not until the 81st minute that the Tritons evened the score.

Brett Jones sent the ball into the top right of the Sea Lion net to bring the score to 1-1. Cooper Lachenbruch earned his second assist of the season, while goalkeeper Pedro Enciso recorded his first. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation, sending the contest into overtime.

The Tritons outshot the Sea Lions 5-1 across the two overtime periods, but the Sea Lions ultimately had the most important one, concluding the game with a goal in the 102nd minute.

Next, UC San Diego will look to bounce back as it begins conference play. The Tritons will head north to face California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State East Bay at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27. UC San Diego holds a 12-0-2 record in the all-time series.
