No. 2 Tritons Capture Runner-Up Finishes at Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 2 University of California San Diego women's rowing team recorded a pair of runner-up finishes as the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 boats competed at the Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday. Both boats had earned slots in their respective grand finals after finishing first in their heats on Friday.

“Today was much better racing conditions than yesterday and I thought we performed very well,” said Head Coach Colin Truex. “Each boat was able to put a good race down but also has segments of their race plan that can improve. FIT was very impressive today and we have some work to do to catch up to them before NCAAs but I am confident that we are up for the challenge!”

The Triton crews faced off against many of the nation's top teams. The Varsity 4 crew raced first, taking on No. 3 FIT, No. 6 Humboldt, No. 8 Nova Southeastern, Rollins (RV), and Jefferson (RV). In the Women's 4 Division II and III grand finals, UC San Diego crossed the finish line at 7:13.679. Their time was good for second behind only FIT (7:10.424), as they came in ahead of the four remaining teams.

The Varsity 8 crew took on almost all of the same teams in the Women's Varsity 8 Division II grand finals, with the exception of Mercyhurst instead of Rollins. The Tritons turned in a time of 6:26.568, capturing the runner-up slot and finishing within just over two seconds behind FIT (6:24.522). Humboldt, Jefferson, Mercyhurst, and Nova Southeastern followed, respectively.

Now, the Tritons await their fate. Team selections for the NCAA Division II Rowing Championships will be announced during an online selection show at 2 p.m. on May 20. The selection show link will be posted here.
