LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of California San Diego softball team has earned their highest ranking of the year, placing 11th in this week's edition of the 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll. The poll was released on Wednesday morning and is voted on by 16 head coaches, with two representing each of the eight regions.
UC San Diego gained five slots, tied with Texas A&M Kingsville for the biggest jump. With a 20-6 overall record and an 18-5 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action, the Tritons earned 247 points from the coaches committee.
The rise comes on the heels of a doubleheader sweep against then-No. 4 Chico State, during a rain-shortened series. UC San Diego captured game one in nine innings, 4-3, and game two, 3-2. With the pair of losses to the Tritons, the Wildcats fall to 13th in the NFCA poll.
The Tritons will look to continue their success, competing at the Tournament of Champions Friday through Sunday in Turlock. Among the five opponents on the slate for the Tritons is Concordia Irvine, who rose from seventh to fifth in this week's NFCA poll. View the full schedule for this weekend here.
