LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 1/2 University of California San Diego women's and men's swimming and diving teams swept Division I opponents Wyoming, Incarnate Word, and San Jose State this afternoon. On the women's side, the Tritons defeated Wyoming, 150-143, Incarnate Word, 143-97, and San Jose State, 155-143. The men captured a 157.5-130.5 victory over Wyoming and a 152-129 win over Incarnate Word.
Relays were a strong point for both Triton teams. The men started the day off right, with Tyler James, Edgar Chin, Garrett Tse, and Sawyer Farmer combining for a first-place finish and a mark of 3:23.49 in the 400 medley relay. James and Farmer were back in action for the 200 freestyle relay, followed by Spencer Daily and Marc Caron. The relay squad turned in a time of 1:23.61 to claim the top spot.
The women also excelled in the 200 free relay, securing nine points in the crucial final race. Cody Hargadon, Grace Murphy, Ciara Franke, and Tina Reuter joined forces to earn first place, with Reuter touching the wall at the 1:36.22 mark just ahead of her San Jose State and Wyoming competitors.
In addition to helping their relay teams, Daily, James, and Reuter all recorded top individual performances throughout the day. Daily turned in an impressive three wins, in the 50 free (20.87), 100 free (46.51), and 100 butterfly (49.33). James notched a victory in the 200 backstroke, with a mark of 1:52.37. Reuter turned in another dominating performance in the 400 IM, finishing in 4:25.97 and nearly 10 seconds ahead of the next-fastest swimmer.
Other first-place finishes came from Edgar Chin and Ellie Whitney. Chin came out on top of a close race in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 56.52. Ellie Whitney outlasted her competition in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:09.18. The Tritons took command of the event, claiming the top three spots. Whitney was joined at the top by Reagan Eickert and Gabbie Brown.
On the diving board, the Tritons faced off against San Jose State. Patty Sullivan had the best finish of the day for the women, racking up 261.30 points in the 3-meter dive. She was followed by fellow senior Brooke Abrantes, who took third with 257.62 points. Jasmyn Cheng placed fifth with a score of 237.98 during the 3-meter action, and Delainey Carlin grabbed sixth with 223.88 points.
In the men's 3-meter competition, Owen Hunt placed first with a score of 231.44. Finlay Thomson nabbed second, turning in a score of 142.35.
Hunt and Thomson placed first and second again, respectively, in the 1-meter dive. Hunt recorded 236.10 points, while freshman classmate Thomson scored 140.10.
In the women's 1-meter dive, Abrantes had the highest finish for the Tritons, placing third with a score of 227.02. Carlin finished one spot behind, with 227.02 points. Cheng (206.54) and Sullivan (196.11) came in sixth and seventh, respectively.
It is a quick turnaround for the Tritons, who return to action on Saturday as they host CSU Bakersfield, the women of Cal State East Bay, and the women of LMU. Admission to the meet is free.
