RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - For the second year in a row, the Second Varsity 8 crew of the University of California San Diego women's rowing team took first in its Grand Final at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships Sunday on Lake Natoma.
UC San Diego won the 2V8 race with a time of 6:46.198, more than three seconds faster than second-place Pacific Lutheran, which went 6:49.886.
In third was UC Santa Barbara (6:51.190) followed by Puget Sound (6:51.190), Humboldt State (6:59.190) and Lewis & Clark (7:06.326).
In the Varsity 8 Grand Final, UCSD placed fifth with a 6:37.814. Western Washington claimed the top spot in 6:23.836. UC Santa Barbara (6:29.994) took second and Humboldt State (6:31.874) finished third. Pacific Lutheran (6:33.162) came in four seconds ahead of the Tritons in fourth, while Lewis & Clark (6:40.018) rounded out the placings.
After a short break from competition, UC San Diego travels to Philadelphia for the Dad Vail Regatta on May 12-13. The Tritons are currently ranked fourth nationally among all NCAA Division II teams.
