Three Tritons, Both Track and Field Teams Named USTFCCCA All-Academic

Triton Women Win San Diego Collegiate Challenge for Fourth Straight Year; Men Finish Second

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's and women's track and field teams played host to the annual San Diego Collegiate Challenge Saturday at Triton Track & Field Stadium.

The UC San Diego women's team finished in first place for a fourth successive year with 142 points. San Diego State placed second with 128 points. Point Loma and Cal State Dominguez Hills took home third and fourth with 64 and 40 points, respectively. The UCSD men's team placed second with 84.5 points. Navy, the 2016 Patriot League champion, took first with 90.5 points.

The main highlights for the Tritons were performances by freshman Claudia Cox and senior Tim Schmidt. Cox improved her NCAA provisional mark in the 400 hurdles with a winning time of 1:01.72. She finished .01 ahead of San Diego State's Madison Gibson (1:01.73). Schmidt earned an NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault. He cleared 16'0.75" to tie Navy's Joseph Bevilaqua in second place.

UCSD combined to win 13 events on the day.

Individual event winners on the track were Wyler Svoboda in the 1500-meter run (4:11.86), Nicholas Rack in the 110 hurdles (14.81), Marisa Padilla in the 400 run (57.89), Paul Doan in the 100 dash (10.64), Cox in the 400 hurdles (1:01.72), Josef Polk in the 400 hurdles (54.80) and Samuel Blake in the 3000 run (8:36.68).

In the field events, senior Savanna Forry earned wins in the hammer throw and the high jump. She hit a distance of 159' in the hammer and cleared 5'8" in the high jump. The UCSD men and women swept the triple jump with sophomore Natalie Caraway winning on the women's with a distance of 37'4" and Khalil Flemister taking first for the men with a distance of 47'7". Luis Carson won the men's high jump, clearing 6'6.75".

The women's 4x400 relay of Jackie Chalmers, Christina Winn, Padilla and anchor Meghan Fletcher took first with a time of 3:54.36.

Next up, the Tritons stay local, competing in the Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet hosted by crosstown rival Point Loma on Saturday, March 18, beginning at 9 a.m.
