SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Another big night from Beth Mounier helped capture the University of California San Diego's ninth-straight win as the Tritons defeated Sonoma State, 72-64, on Saturday night at Santa Rosa Junior College.
UC San Diego rises to 13-3 overall and 9-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Sonoma State drops to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in CCAA action.
Hot shooting from Mounier led to a new career record of six three-pointers made in a single game. She scored a career-tying 22 points off of just six field goals. She was 60 percent (6-10) from three-point range and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. She finished the night with a 50 percent (6-12) in shooting overall.
Haley Anderson finished the game with a trifecta of perfect shooting. She was 4-4 overall, 2-2 from long range and 2-2 from the free-throw line, good for a total of 12 points.
Two other Tritons scored in double digits, with Dalayna Sampton coming in with 12 points and Cassie MacLeod finishing with 10. Sampton led all rebounders with eight at the end of the night.
Kylie Kiech led the Seawolves with 17 points, followed by Madison Burroughs with 13. Jessica Mitz nabbed six rebounds.
UCSD was 24-46 overall, good for a 52.2 shooting percentage. Sonoma was kept to 40 percent (26-56). Stellar shooting from the three-point line meant that the Tritons would finish at 48 percent (12-25) from behind the arc. It is the most three-pointers made by the Tritons in a single match since December 19, 2015 where they sank 12 against Alaska Fairbanks.
A strong start from UCSD had them leading by five off of a Sampton lay-up and a Mounier three, just 57 seconds into the contest. The Tritons finished the quarter with 70 percent (7-10) in shooting, but Sonoma rallied back and shot 39 percent to make it 20-16 at the end of the first.
At the half, the Tritons trailed the Seawolves by a single point (33-34), thanks to a determined Sonoma offense and defense that limited UCSD to just 30.8 percent (4-13).
A big third quarter saw UC San Diego lock down on the defensive end, limiting SSU to just nine points. UCSD scored 14 and continued the its offensive into the fourth quarter where Mounier splashed three of her six long ranger shots. Mounier scored half of her total points in the fourth quarter alone.
"We showed our resiliency tonight," said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "We struggled offensively but had Haley and Beth make big shots."
UC San Diego returns home from the four-game road trip for a single match at RIMAC Arena against Cal State San Marcos on Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
