SAN DIEGO - The UC San Diego men's and women's track and field teams competed on day one of the 38th Annual Aztec Invitational at the AzTrack at SDSU Sports Deck Friday. The Aztec Invite began on Thursday with the first day of the decathlon and heptathlon.
Redshirt junior Dan Golubovic grabbed an automatic NCAA qualifier and broke a 23-year-old school record in his first decathlon of the season, his 7139 points easily good enough for first place while eclipsing Matt Inskeep's 7014 from back in 1993. He scored 3828 points on the day after tallying 3311 on Thursday. Golubovic's best event was the pole vault, where he matched Creed Stary's 19-year-old school standard and grabbed a provisional qualifier in the process by clearing a height of 16'6.75”, for 926 points.
Golubovic also won four other events of the decathlon, in the shot put (41'11.5”), the 110 hurdles (14.97), the discus (139'9”) and the javelin (192'6”), and tied for first in the high jump (5'11.25”). Golubovic's personal-record mark in the javelin is the sixth best in program history. He becomes the first Triton to book his ticket to Bradenton, Fla., at the end of May for the NCAA Division II Championships. It will mark a second NCAA appearance for the Manhattan Beach product, having placed 12th in the decathlon at the 2014 meet in Allendale, Mich.
Sophomore sprinter Paul Doan won the 100 with a time of 10.79.
Junior Jared Senese took first in the 400, crossing the finish line in 49.56.
Graduate transfer Chloe Gustafson won the second heat, second overall, of the 1500 with a time of 4:39.61. Senior Paige Hughes came in third in her heat, fourth overall, crossing the finish line in 4:40.51.
