LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team used stellar shooting to take down Cal Poly Pomona, 90-76, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Saturday at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons shot 50.8 percent (31-61) from the floor, 42.3 percent (11-26) from behind the arc and 81 percent (17-21) from the charity stripe.
With the win, UCSD improves its overall record to 10-2 and is now 5-1 in conference games. The 2014-15 West Region runner-up Broncos drop to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in CCAA play.
For the Tritons, senior guard Jamie Katuna eclipsed her career high from the night before, this time going for 36 points. She also dished out a career-best seven assists. Junior forward Cassie MacLeod added 18 points and redshirt sophomore guard Taylor Tanita recorded her first double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. It was her second game with a career-high 10 helpers in as many nights.
CPP used its size to outrebound UCSD 39-27 and outscore the Tritons 48-22 in the paint. Marshanique Hall paced the Broncos with 20 points.
The Tritons opened up to a nine-point advantage, 20-11, after a layup from freshman forward Shandiin Armao. CPP closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run as UCSD led 20-17 at the end of the period.
The Broncos outscored the Tritons 6-2 to begin the second frame and take a one-point lead. It would be the closest they would get as Katuna made a layup and the ensuing free throw on an and-one opportunity to give UCSD the lead for good. The Tritons concluded the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 47-32 advantage into halftime.
UCSD scored 23 points in the third period to open up the gap to 19 points, 70-51, at the end of the quarter.
In the final frame, the Tritons grabbed their biggest lead, 81-58, after a Mounier bomb from long range. The Broncos closed the margin to 13, but the lead was insurmountable as UC San Diego prevailed, 90-76.
The Tritons hit the road to the Bay Area for their next game, taking on San Francisco State on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
