FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's tennis team opened its spring schedule Wednesday with a 6-1 loss against Cal State Fullerton at Titan Courts in Orange County.
UCSD (0-1) is ranked 18th in NCAA Division II, while Fullerton (1-0) is unranked in Division I.
The Tritons' lone win came at No. 4 singles as freshman Alexandra Weil defeated Masako Makiba in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4.
UCSD's Kyra Scott, the 28th-ranked singles player in the country, took her No. 1 match against Alexis Valenzuela to a tiebreaker, but ended up falling 6-0, 3-6, 10-5.
The Titans won the other four singles contests in straight sets.
Ranked No. 16, the doubles team of Scott and Britta Mosser represented the Tritons in the top spot, where they were downed, 7-5, by Camille De Leon and Sarah Nuno. At No. 3, Weil and classmate Madison Hale kept it close but were edged, 7-6 (4-0) by Makiba and Karla Portalatin.
UC San Diego plays another road match against a Division I opponent Saturday as it travels across town to take on the University of San Diego (11 a.m.).
