LA JOLLA, Calif. - Both of the UC San Diego men's and women's track and field teams took second at the All-UC Championships at Triton Track & Field Stadium on Saturday. The meet was highlighted by five new UCSD student-athletes, four for the women and one for the men, grabbing NCAA provisional marks.
The Triton women narrowly came behind UC Santa Barbara by nine points, 169-160, with UC Irvine finishing third with 48 points. On the men's side, UCSD scored 151 with UCSB scoring 168. UCI came in third with 42.
Anneke Kakebeen took first, broke her own school record by more than 10 seconds and grabbed a provisional mark in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 11:03.84.
Sabrina Pimentel won the 800-meter run (2:12.44) and also got a provisional mark in the process.
The women's (48.01) and men's (41.66) 4x100 relays came away victorious over UCSB, the only other competitor in those events.
Only .01 separated Justin Hunter (22.30) and Emmanuel Elijah (22.31) as they went 1-2 in the 200.
The women's 4x400 relay of Pimentel, Marisa Padilla, Jackie Chalmers and Ellexi Snover took second to UCSB, but grabbed a provisional mark with a time of 3:47.24.
Snover won and got a provisional mark in the javelin with a throw of 140'9". In the men's javelin, senior All-American Nash Howe (210'4") made his season debut and narrowly edged out UCSB's Thomas Gore-Schrek (210'3") by an inch for the win, grabbing a provisional mark in the process.
Matt Bowen, who already came into the meet with a very strong provisional mark in the triple jump, bettered his personal record and took first in the event with a distance of 50'4.5". The jump moves him ever so closer to Ka Wai Ng's school mark of 51'9". The true freshman had moved right into the No. 2 spot on the program list with his leap of 49'11.25" at the season-openinig Soka Peace Invitational. Derek Van de Streek took second with a jump of 46' 8.75". Bowen also came out on top in the long jump with a mark of 22'3.75".
Kristin Sato (38'7.75"), Chantia Justice (38'4"), Tais Marinho-Gomez (37'11.25), Ashley Rhorer (35'11.5") and Kristen Daugherty (35'7.75") swept the first five spots, respectively, in the triple jump. Sato's jump was good enough for a provisional mark. Casey Buck (17'6.25") and Sato (17'3.5") took first and second, respectively, in the long jump.
Chrissi Carr won the pole vault with a height of 12'5.5", which puts her only a half-inch shy of the school record.
The Tritons will stay at home to host the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, March 14.
