TURLOCK, Calif. - The UC San Diego softball team dropped its final game of the Tournament of Champion Sunday with a 4-3 loss to Western Oregon at Arrowhead Field. After taking their second lead of the game in the top of the fourth on two errors by the Wolves, the Tritons allowed two runs on an error in the bottom of the inning. UCSD are now 19-15 on the season.
The Tritons put up the first run of the game in the third inning on a RBI single by Lauren Sanders. Freshman Rachel Phillips led off the frame with a single up the middle, and outfielder Taylor Abeyta followed with an infield single. Kendall Baker later loaded the bases on a walk. Sanders then found a hole on the left side to bring in Abeyta for the 1-0 lead.
But the Wolves answered back in the bottom of the inning. With two runners in scoring position Amanda Evola reached on an error for the first run and Ku'ulei Siolo singled later to put WOU on top, but not for long.
With four errors committed by the Wolves, the Tritons scored two runs in the top of the fourth to lead 3-2. Thanks to a fielding error by WOU's Amy Anderson, Abeyta reached base and Kelsi Maday scored from second.
WOU took the lead for the final time in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs on an error.
After a scoreless fifth, the Tritons nearly came from behind in the sixth. But the Wolves made a critical play at the plate and stranded two runners on base to secure the 4-3 win.
Left-handed pitcher Alexis Edwards finished the day with two earned runs, seven hits and two strike outs in six innings. The junior gave up just one hit in the first and second inning. Phillips and Abeyta led the Triton offense each going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Tritons will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday as they face Chico State on the road.
