11 WINS AND COUNTING
With Monday's doubleheader sweep of Adelphi, UCSD picked up its 10th and 11th straight wins. The Tritons are currently on their longest winning streak since picking up 14 straight over the span of the 2011 and 2012 seasons. This is tied for the longest single-season win streak in head coach Patti Gerckens' career. She previously accomplished this streak in 2001 during the Tritons' first year in Division II. UCSD's longest single-season win streak is set at 15 by the 1988 squad.
GERCKENS EARNS 600TH WIN
Triton head coach Patti Gerckens, in her 23rd season in charge, earned her milestone 600th career win with a doubleheader sweep against San Francisco State on Friday, Feb. 13. UCSD won the opener, 4-1, and the Tritons' 5-3 victory in game two helped Gerckens accomplish the feat. Already the winningest head coach in program history, Gerckens has led the Tritons to 10 NCAA postseason berths, six CCAA Championship appearances, one CCAA Championship title in 2012 and a national championship in 2011.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
UCSD received votes in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II poll. The Tritons earned four votes in the rankings for the week of Feb. 18. The rankings feature two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foes with Cal State Monterey Bay coming in at No. 3 and Humboldt State at No. 20. For the complete list of rankings, click here.
CCAA LEADERS
UCSD began conference play on Friday and Saturday with a four-game series sweep over San Francisco State at Triton Softball Field. The Tritons' 4-0 start puts them in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings. Cal State East Bay sits in second place with a 3-1 conference mark. In addition to being at the top of the standings, UCSD leads the conference in shutouts (3), triples (3), and sacrifice hits (17)). The Tritons ranks second with ERA (1.11), opposing batting average (.192), and hits (86).
PRIME PITCHING
UCSD is off to an impressive start in the circle this season. The team currently ranks second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a 1.11 ERA. Additionally, all three UCSD pitchers rank among the top 5 players in the CCAA in ERA. Mo Omori is third in the league with a 0.94 ERA, Hannah Duarte is fourth with a 1.15 ERA, and Alexis Edwards is fifth with a 1.22 ERA. The Tritons pitching staff has allowed just 12 earned runs in 12 games, while recording 37 strikeouts and three total shutouts.
CLEARING THE FENCE
Freshman outfielder Kelsi Maday now leads the Tritons with three home runs this season after she hit one out in game two on Monday against Adelphi. Maday is on pace to hit 12 homers in the regular season, which would tie the UCSD single-season record. Freshman catcher Lauren Sanders is second on the team with two. Sanders is on pace to hit eight home runs this season, which would tie the mark that Tritons' assistant coach Kris Lesovsky set in 2009.
MO SAVING THE DAY
Senior pitcher Mo Omori has accumulated four saves through just 12 games, putting her in a five-way tie for first place on UCSD's single-season list. Omori is on pace for 16 saves in the regular season, which would not only set a new single-season record, but would eclipse assistant coach Camille Gaito's first place all-time record of nine.
SHUT IT DOWN
The Tritons lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with three shutouts this season. UCSD recorded its first of the season on Feb. 7 in game one against St. Martin's. Hannah Duarte started giving up just three hits in five innings of work, and Mo Omori completed the game with two perfect innings as the Tritons won, 3-0. Duarte then completed her first game en route to the Tritons second shutout in game one against San Francisco State on Feb. 14. The Long Beach native narrowly missed tossing a no-hitter. She finished the game giving up only one hit in five innings of work as the Tritons dismantled the Gators, 8-0. The entire UCSD pitching staff came together to help blank San Francisco State in game two on Feb. 14. Junior lefty Alexis Edwards got the start in the circle and allowed just four runners on base in four innings. Omori came in to relieve Edwards in the fifth for another perfect outing. The senior went 1.2 innings without allowing a single hit. Duarte then sealed up the shutout, going the final 1.1 innings and giving up just one walk as UCSD completed the four-game series sweep against San Francisco State with a 1-0 win.
MONDAY'S REVIEW
After blanking CCAA opponent SF State in both of Friday and Saturday' contests at Triton Softball Field, UCSD continued the winning streak on Monday against Adelphi. The Tritons used an impressive 12 hits in the opener to win 7-5, and Alexis Edwards recorded her first complete game of the season in a 7-2 decision. For the first time in the 2015 season, UCSD had to fightt its way back for a victory. Adelphi took an early 1-0 lead in first inning and struck again in the third to make it 2-0 Panthers. Taylor Abeyta hit a triple to drive in McKenna Clewett in the bottom of the third and Kendall Baker, who was pinch running for Lauren Sanders, scored on a wild pitch to tie the game up at two apiece in the fourth. UCSD jumped out to a huge lead by scoring five runs in the fifth inning, which feature two two-run doubles from Sanders and Emily Sklencar and a RBI bunt from Ashley Chestnut. Edwards brought home the win in game two as the lefty gave up just five hits and one earned run while earning her fourth win of the season.
