LA JOLLA, Calif. - The wins keep coming for the Tritons as UC San Diego softball team swept Adelphi in Monday's doubleheader at Triton Softball Field for their 11th straight win. The Tritons used an impressive 12 hits in the opener to win 7-5, and Alexis Edwards recorded her first complete game of the season in a 7-2 decision.
The Tritons improve to 11-1 overall and are on their longest winning streak since winning 14 games from the end of the 2011 season to the beginning of the 2012.
Game One
For the first time in the 2015 season, UCSD had to fightt its way back for a victory. Adelphi took an early 1-0 lead in first inning as Brenna Martini used a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Jordan Catalano. The Panthers struck again in the third. This time Catalano earned the RBI on a single up the middle.
The Tritons began to work their way back in the bottom of the third. With two outs, McKenna Clewett singled up the middle and freshman Taylor Abeyta hit her second triple of the season to cut UCSD's deficit to 2-1. Kendall Baker, who was pinch running for Lauren Sanders, scored the tying run on a fielding error by Martini in the fourth.
UCSD jumped out to a huge lead by scoring five runs in the fifth inning. The Tritons loaded the bases on three straight bunts from Clewett, Abeyta and Emma Schneider. Freshman Lauren Sanders then drove in the go ahead runs with a two-run double. Kelsi Maday walked to load the bases again, and Ashley Chestnut laid down the fourth bunt of the inning to bring home Schneider. Emily Sklencar then gave the Tritons a 7-2 lead with the second two-run double of the inning.
Adelphi tried to fight back scoring two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, but Mo Omori held the Panthers off and picked up her fourth save in the 7-5 win.
Hannah Duarte, who started in the circle for the Tritons, worked six innings giving up four earned runs, six hits and striking out four batters while improving her record to 4-1.
Game Two
Junior Alexis Edwards tossed her first complete game of the season in the final game of the doubleheader. The lefty gave up just five hits and one earned run while earning her fourth win of the season.
In the bottom of the second, the Tritons took a 1-0 lead on Sklencar's second double of the day. She drove in Maday who reached on a walk and later advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Omori.
The Panthers tied it up at one apiece in the top of the third, but the Tritons answered back with a big inning in the bottom of the frame.
With Clewett and Abeyta on first and second, Schneider advanced the two into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Sanders then hit another two-run double, and Maday cleared the fences for the third time this year putting the Tritons up 5-1.
UCSD added its final runs in the fourth when Schneider hit a double down the right field line to drive in Clewett and Abeyta. The Panthers added a final run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough for Adelphi as the Tritons took the game, 7-2.
The Tritons head to Turlock this weekend to play a four-game series against California Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) opponent Cal State Stanislaus. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and Saturday's games will start at 11:00 a.m.
