LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team won its sixth straight game with a 74-60 decision over Cal State Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup Friday at RIMAC Arena.
The Tritons improve to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Otters drop to 4-3 overall and are 0-1 in CCAA action.
UCSD was led by senior forward Farrah Shokoor who grabbed her fifth straight double-double with a game-high 26 points, shooting 64.2 percent (9-14) from the floor, and grabbed 15 rebounds. Sophomore guard Taylor Tanita pitched in 13 points and a game-best five assists. Junior forward Cassie MacLeod had 10 points and four dimes.
Victoria Dorn and Jazmine Johnson paced CSUMB with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Neither team could find an advantage to start the game, remaining deadlocked at 8-8 in the middle of the opening period. The Tritons used two three-pointers from freshman guard Joleen Yang and junior guard Haley Anderson to create a four-point cushion, 19-15, at the end of the first quarter.
The Otters went on a 17-6 run in the second frame to take the lead, 30-28. UCSD closed out the period with seven unanswered points, ignited by Shokoor's three-point play on a layup and-one, to go into halftime with a 35-30 advantage.
The Tritons limited CSUMB to just nine points in the third quarter. UCSD scored 13 to take a nine-point lead, 48-39, into the final period.
Shokoor started the fourth frame with two layup and-one conversions on back-to-back possessions. MacLeod gave the Tritons their biggest lead of the game, 74-57, with 1:47 remaining.
UCSD takes final exams next week and is off from competition for two weeks before heading to Alaska for the Seawolf Hoops Classic, where it will take on Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. PT, and host Alaska Anchorage on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. PT.
