ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team used a 52-point second half to defeat Sonoma State, 85-52, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup Wednesday at The Wolves' Den.
The Tritons pick up their fifth straight win and improve to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Seawolves drop to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in CCAA action.
Junior forward Cassie MacLeod led UCSD with a game-high 18 points. Junior guard Beth Mounier pitched in 16 points and senior forward Farrah Shokoor grabbed her fourth consecutive double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Sonoma State converted on its first two possessions to take a quick 4-0 lead. The Tritons settled down as they went on a 16-4 run from that point to go up 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
UCSD opened it up to a 17-point advantage, 31-14, in the second period after a layup by redshirt sophomore guard Taylor Tanita. The Seawolves closed out the last three minutes of the quarter with a 7-2 run, but the Tritons still led 33-23 at halftime.
The UCSD offense was on fire in the third quarter, scoring 31 points in the period with MacLeod responsible for 14. The Tritons held a comfortable 64-35 advantage going into the final frame.
UCSD grabbed its largest lead, 69-35, with 9:08 remaining in the game. The Tritons outscored Sonoma State 21-17 in the fourth quarter to cruise to a 33-point victory.
UCSD is back at home this Friday, Dec. 4 against Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA action. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Students in attendance will get a free pair of sunglasses, sponsored by Toyota. There will also be a free student tailgate at RIMAC Field in between the women's and men's games.
