LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team fell to Cal State San Bernardino 64-56 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup on Friday at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons had a poor shooting night as the Coyotes limited UCSD to 32.3 percent (21-65) from the field.
With the loss, the Tritons drop to 7-4 in the CCAA and 9-7 overall while CSUSB improves to 8-3 in the conference and 12-3 overall.
Adriana Brodie got things started for CSUSB as her two layups quickly made the score 4-0.
With 13:57 left in the first half, Miranda Seto converted a tough shot off the glass to give UCSD an 8-7 lead. However, Briana Baker would counter with a layup to put the Coyotes back on top.
Beth Mounier countered moments later with a three-point basket to give the Tritons an 11-9 advantage. It would be the last time UCSD would have the advantage as Chelsea Barnes made two consecutive basket over the next two Coyote posessions to give her team back the lead.
CSUSB closed out the first period with a three-pointer from Chelsea Austin as the Tritons trailed the Coyotes by nine-points, 36-27, at halftime.
UCSD eventually cut the deficit to three, 44-41, after a Haley Anderson three-pointer and two Farrah Shokoor free throws with 11:45 left in the game. However, Alexcia Mack would make a shot from behind the arc to increase the margin to six.
The Coyotes grabbed the biggest lead of the game, 55-43, after a good Briana Harden free throw with 6:01 on the clock as they cruised the rest of the way for the victory.
Mack led the way for CSUSB with a game-high 20 points and Barnes recorded a double-double with 10 points and game-best 12 rebounds.
For UCSD, Jamie Katuna was the only scorer in double figures with 11 points. Seto, who returned after missing the previous four games, came off the bench to score eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Tritons will have to quickly regroup as they take on conference leader and 25th-ranked Humboldt State on Saturday. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. In honor of Siblings Weekend, any sibling of a UCSD student will be admitted free of charge.
