UCSD SPIRIT NIGHT 2013 RULES AND POLICIES
OBJECTIVE: To
have a friendly competition among the six colleges centered around the Feb. 8
UCSD basketball doubleheader vs. Humboldt State at RIMAC Arena. The women's
game tips off at 5:30 PM followed by the men at 7:30 PM.
There will be eight
events/competitions in which the colleges will be awarded points according to
their performance. The college with the most overall points will win the Spirit
Night Trophy (Cup of Cheer) which will be presented following the men's
basketball game. The focus is on bringing all of the colleges together as
one-in support of UC San Diego.
Events:
SPIRIT PROMOTION - Each
college will decorate its living area (and/or adjacent "public" locations
generally considered part of the college) in school colors, promoting UCSD
spirit, pride and the Friday night basketball games. A committee, selected by
the Athletic Dept., will visit each of the colleges throughout the week to
judge. Among the criteria will be use of blue & gold, use of Triton name
and logo, promotion of the basketball games as well as creativity and quality
of promotional efforts. Judges will be looking for three "major" elements-two
of these will be the college dining hall and dorm windows and a third should be
another high traffic adjacent area which will create increased awareness. The
colleges need to inform judges as to the site of the four elements. Please note
that themes can be used but are not required and those themes should not carry
over to the arena Friday night. All colleges have agreed to join together in helping to decorate at The
Village.
SPIRIT RALLY - Price
Center Plaza will be the venue for a noon pre-game rally the week of the game (tentatively
Thursday, Feb. 7). Two rally "contests" will be held with the combined scoring
determining the overall order of finish. First, each college will designate up
to two representatives to "body paint" a member of the UCSD men's basketball
team (hands, brushes, sponges and other items may be used to paint but must be
supplied by college). The painters will present their "work" and a panel will
be selected to judge the results. Colleges may include "props" for their player
and/or a "performance element" in their presentation.
The second contest, involving
the women's basketball team, will be part of the above-mentioned rally and will
likely be some type of relay involving at least two students from each college.
GAME ATTENDANCE - A
computerized (card swipe) attendance count for each college will be set up in
the RIMAC Arena lobby. At 6:00 PM, a preliminary count will be made and those
in attendance at that time will be multiplied by 1.5. A second count will take
place at 7:30 PM and those arriving between those two times will count as one.
Additionally, computerized
college attendance counts (via ID card swipe system) will be tabulated for the conference
basketball games preceding Spirit Night-Friday, Jan. 11 and Saturday, Jan. 12-as
well as the Men's Volleyball matches on Friday, Jan. 25, Saturday, Jan. 26 and
Wednesday, Jan. 30. The combined total of the five game counts will yield a
total count for each college. That total count will be added to the Spirit
Night attendance figure and used as part of an equation factoring in the total enrollment
of each college to produce a final attendance number. The colleges will be
ranked according to that final number.
GAME ENVIRONMENT - Colleges
will be judged on the overall presentation of their section which will include
decoration, unity, use of school colors (décor and attire), volume, consistency
and creativity. Although decoration will be part of the mix, cheering and UCSD
support at both games will carry greater emphasis.
Judges will be looking for
quality over quantity and things that are connected to UCSD as opposed to
non-related themes and simply making noise. Any "unusual" displays must be
cleared with the UCSD Athletic Dept. (items that block fans' views, are in the
aisle ways, attached to posts or walls, etc.) and should not interfere with the
basketball game. The Triton Tide will organize an effort to do general,
non-college decorating in the arena.
HALFTIME CONTEST - The
traditional halftime competition of "basketball musical chairs" will feature
one contestant from each college (college designates). There will be contests
at the half of both women's and men's games. Point breakdowns will be awarded
for both contests with the final order of finish determined by the combined
point totals. A female needs to be chosen for the women's game and a male for
the men's game.
TRITON JAM - The tenth-year
"midnight madness" type event, re-introducing basketball at the start of the
winter quarter, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8. Attendance will be counted for
each college at this event, on the same percentage basis as the Spirit Night
judging. Triton Jam will include introductions of both basketball teams,
comments from the two head coaches, contests, great prizes, free food and
interactive games.
KNOCKOUT - There will be
a five-round Knockout Tournament between the colleges. Each college will
participate in five rounds of knockout with each featuring a different group of
participants (men, women, staff and student council reps). Players must be
students or staff at the college they represent and a person can only
participate in one of the five rounds. Each college may enter one player per
round. The staff entry may not be a student. Rules and a game schedule will be
provided.
Also included in this event
will be a swimming relay, held in conjunction with a UCSD home swim meet. Each
college will enter a four-person (2 men/2 women) team in a 200-yd. freestyle
relay. Specific time and rules to follow. Order of finish and points will be
added to the Knockout scores to get a total score/result for this event.
