UCSD Takes Part in Sun Angel Track Classic, Mangrum Invitational Saturday

TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC San Diego track and field teams had another busy day of competition on Saturday, splitting time between the 33rd Annual Sun Angel Classic and the Fourth Annual Mangrum Invitational.

A select group was testing its mettle against mostly Division I and elite-level competitors at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., while a larger contingent was squaring off against a host of local schools at the Mangrum Invitational in San Marcos. As usual, there were plenty of great results from the Triton student-athletes at both meets.

"We had a nice showing at Sun Angel today against some of the better D-I programs in the nation, as well as numerous elite athletes," women's head coach Darcy Ahner said from Arizona. "The group at San Marcos had a really good performance as well with a good number of event winners."

Senior Nick Howe had an outstanding performance to highlight action in Arizona, uncorking a big throw of 229' in the men's javelin. His mark was good enough for second place overall behind former University of Washington standout Kyle Nielsen, who hit 246'1" to win the event. In addition, Howe's throw is the top mark in Division II this season and the second-best effort of his career - he won a second straight NCAA title with a throw of 231'3" at the end of last season.

Sophomore Quentin McWhorter took home 11th place in the men's triple jump, landing at 48'6.75" which was good enough for an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier. The performance ranks No. 3 all-time at UCSD behind marks from current teammate Ka Wai Ng (49'6.5") earlier this season and Scott Tsuda (48'10.75") in 2009.

Sophomore Lauren Irish picked up an NCAA provisional qualifier for UCSD on the women's side, finishing with a time of 1:02.46 in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed 16th in a field of mostly D-I and unattached athletes.

Senior Jacqueline Rose also had a big day, posting a time of 54.89 in the 400-meter dash. The school record holder in the event, Rose finished third overall behind Great Britain's Margaret Adeoye (53.43) and Colorado University's Eileen Gehring (54.41). It was the second-fastest time of her career.

Other notable performances at Sun Angel included Zach Nagengast in the men's discus (third, 152'11"), Erin Langford in the women's long jump (sixth, 18'8") and Sabrina Pimentel in the women's 800 (ninth, 2:15.35).

Switching gears to the Mangrum Invitational, there were plenty of highlights as UCSD won a total of five events on the day. David Baker captured first place in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.00 flat, while teammate Benjamin Berthet won the men's pole vault after clearing 14'11" and Ryan Eckert was the top competitor in the shot put with a toss of 51'1".

On the women's side, Lorato Anderson won the 800 after clocking in at 2:18.21, while Aletha Vassilakis placed first in the javelin with a throw of 116'4".

Next up for the Tritons is the 2012 Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday, April 14 in Claremont.
