LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Big West announced Tuesday the conference's latest Track and Field Athletes of the Week, as voted on by the league's head coaches. UC San Diego's
Allyson Abandonato is the Women's Track Athlete of the Week, and
Feyi Olukanni is the Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Â
Both Tritons are coming off event wins at their respective meets last weekend, and both set new school records in the process. They are the first two Tritons to win Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Â
Abandonato won the women's 800m at San Diego State's Aztec Coastal Classic with a time of 2:06.68, beating her own school record by over two seconds. That mark is also the second-best time in The Big West so far this season. A senior from Corona, California, Abandonato is majoring in public health at Muir College.
Â
Olukanni won the women's shot put at Cal State Fullerton's Ben Brown Invitational with a mark of 15.47m to set the school record for the first time in her career. That throw currently leads the country. Olukanni also competed in discus, finishing fifth at 48.72m, and hammer, finishing seventh at 50.33m. A senior from Clovis, California, Olukanni is majoring in pharmacological chemistry at Muir College. She is the reigning Big West champion in shot put.
Â
The Tritons will be back in action March 27-28 at UCLA's Bob Larsen Distance Carnival and Jim Bush Legends Meet.
