Thu Kicks Off Sun Angel Classic With Strong Showing in Hammer

TEMPE, Ariz. - UC San Diego senior thrower Danielle Thu turned in a noteworthy performance in the women's hammer throw on Friday, kicking off the 32nd Annual Sun Angel Track and Field Classic on the Arizona State campus.

Thu finished third overall in the event's premier division after uncorking a big toss of 197'1". The mark was her second-best throw ever, less than two inches shy of her school-record of 198'8", which won the NCAA Championship in 2009.

The Spring Valley, Calif. native was the top collegian in the event, finishing behind 2008 U.S. Olympian Jessica Cosby (236'11") and Heather Steacy (232'3"), who was competing with Lethbridge, a club team from England. She beat out other competitors from Michigan State, Iowa State, Purdue, BYU and ASU.

Thu is one of a hand full of athletes competing for the Tritons in Tempe this weekend. The remaining individuals will compete on Saturday, with the rest of the team taking part in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
