HAYWARD, Calif. - Chelsea Carlisle led four players in double
figures as the UC San Diego women's basketball team rolled to an 82-44 blowout
victory over Cal State East on Monday evening at Pioneer Gymnasium.
Carlisle scored a
game-high 18 points for the Tritons, who shot a season-best 61% from the field
and sank 13 threes, also a high mark in 2010-11. The Tritons were in command
for the duration and led by as many as 42 on the way to their sixth victory in
eight games.
UCSD improves to 6-7
overall and moves to 4-2 in California Collegiate Athletic
Association play. The Tritons swept the season series with Cal State East Bay
after defeating the Pioneers 61-37 on December 14 at RIMAC Arena.
CSUEB, which is still
searching for its first win of the season, falls to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in the
CCAA.
Carlisle's 18 points
came on just nine shots, as the junior All-American finished 6-of-9 from the
floor, including 3-of-6 from the three-point line, and hit 3-of-4 free throws.
She also dished out a season-high-tying nine assists and came away with four
steals.
Daisy Feder had
a good night off the bench, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, with all four of her field goals coming from the behind the arc. Emily Osga hit 5-of-7 shots and tallied 12 points, while Erin Grady was 5-of-9 and
put in 10.
UCSD's five starters
were a combined 19-for-28 in the game, a blistering 68%. As a team, the Tritons
converted 30-of-49 shots to surpass their previous shooting high of just under 60% in
the win over Western New Mexico on November 26. UCSD finished 13-of-25 from
downtown, which was also a high this season at 57%.
"I think our passing
really led to great shots," head coach Charity Elliott said. "We shot the ball
well, but we also finished with 22 assists and that's a very good number for
us. "We were focused and very unselfish tonight and we got a good result."
Claudia Nelson
finished with 10 points and seven rebounds to lead the Pioneers, who shot just
32% from the field. Maria Dinesen scored nine points, but no other player
tallied more than six for East Bay.
Dinesen opened the
game with a triple for CSUEB, but it was UCSD from there, as the Tritons scored
18 of the next 20 points to take a 18-5 advantage with 12 minutes remaining in
the opening half. Carlisle hit back-to-back threes to get UCSD off and running.
The Pioneers would
trim the lead down to eight at 25-17 four minutes later, but Osga answered with
five straight points for the Tritons and Megan Perry hit another long ball to
put UCSD back up by 16 with 5:35 left in the half. The Tritons extended their
advantage to 44-25, as Feder's three with three seconds left pushed the margin
to 19 at halftime.
UCSD shot an
unbelievable 71% in the opening half, converting 17-24 attempts, and hit
7-of-10 three-point tries.
The Tritons outscored
the Pioneers 14-4 over the first five minutes of the second half to take an
insurmountable 58-29 lead and then pushed the advantage to 71-37 on Feder's third
three of the evening with seven minutes remaining. Elaina White's jumper with
3:03 left to play gave UCSD its biggest lead at 81-39.
The Tritons will look
to keep rolling when they travel to Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus this
weekend. UCSD will square off with the Wildcats on Friday at 5:30 p.m., before
taking on the Warriors at the same time on Saturday.
